WALPYRGUS: Make it darker

walpyrgus

There are guys in this business who are some of the nicest people you would ever meet. I remember Keep It True VIII back in 2007 when Twisted Tower Dire peformed. It was my first time at the festival, and one of the people i bumped into was Scott from Twisted Tower Dire. I guess I went up to him and introduced myself as I had just done a phone interview with him for Scream Magazine which I worked for back then. You could really feel that Scott appreciated it, and neither me or my friend left before Scott had given us each a Twisted Tower Dire-shirt . A really nice gesture from a really nice guy. AMBUSH: Born out of frustration

Ambush_2

Doing interviews is quite similar to most other things in life, it doesn’t hurt to have some experience. It’s a good thing for the interviewer, and it’s definitely a good thing for the bands. Ambush from Växjo in Sweden clearly doesn’t have a lot of experience doing interviews, resulting in this phone conversation being a little too predictable. Of course, the problem could just as well be my questions being a little too boring and leaving little room for exciting answers.  Continue reading

Need your help and feedback

Dear all!

I have a lot of people visiting Metal Squadron without signing up for future updates either on Facebook or via mail. If you came here by accident, and this is simply not what you are looking for, please ignore this message, but if you found the site useful and think you might visit the page again, please sign up.  leifkringen_skallelogo_trådkorsversjon_liten

I also strongly encourage people to comment on the reviews and the interviews. It doesn’t take long to leave a few words, either positive or negative. All this will help me a lot during my work to have regular updates and generally improve the site.

You’ll find all the details to the right in your screen, or you could go here:

Thank you!

Playlist: Week 19

1. FALCONER “Black Moon Rising” (Metal Blade)Falconer-BlackMoonRising

– Might not be the most popular band around here, but I’ve had a really weak spot for this band since the debut. “Black Moon Rising” might be the best record they’ve released since “Falconer”.

2.  NOBLE BEAST “Noble Beast” (Tridroid)

– What is it with me and the more melodic stuff this time? Extremely catchy, singalong European metal done by an American band, doesn’t sound like my stuff at all. Noble Beast blends Blind Guardian with Running Wild and Iron Saviour. A huge surprise!

CLOVEN ALTAR: Metal in the Blood

Cloven altar-artwork Stormspell seems to be capturing a lot of the up and coming demo acts these days.  One reason might be that Iordan is good at keeping up with what’s happening in the scene, but I guess it also comes down to the fact that he has earned a reputation for helping smaller bands and projects before some of them have moved on to bigger and better (?) things. Cloven Altar, the brainchild of Dustin Altar, is about to unleash their self titled, three track EP through Stormspell, and as always, we were curious to know as many details as possible. PORTRAIT: Not Dead Yet

portrait_photo02

A late evening in 2007, a Saturday I believe, and as dark as only a late November-evening can be here in Norway. Portrait has entered a small stage in Oslo to perform tracks off their demo “Welcome To My Funeral”, their seven inch “Into Nothingness” and a couple of tasters off what is gonna become their first full lenght, released in about half a year’s time. Even though there is clearly some potential to be heard, the peformance leaves a lot to be desired, both vocally as well as instrumentally. I catch myself thinking that a lot of work and some member changes will need to happen before the band is ready for the next step. An evening, six and a half years later (the darkness is still there, if you wonder), one of two surviving members from that pitch black November night, the guitarist Christian Lindell gives me a call to talk about Portrait’s brand new, third album, “Crossroads”. Continue reading

BATTLEROAR: The Swords Are Drawn

battleroar-promo2

Albums like Slough Feg’s  creative “Digital Resistance”, the  melodic bliss of “The Awakening” by Dark Forest or Nocturnal’s relentless ”Storming Evil” are all among the early highlights of 2014, but come April 25th, and they are all surpassed by Battleroar’s new opus, the magnificent “Blood Of Legends”. A more than good enough reason to hook up with guitarist and original member Kostas Tzortzis for a chat about the new album, the new singer and all the latest happenings within and around the band since “To Death And Beyond” was released. Continue reading

BELOW: Drinking Tea With The Devil

below

Below, from Nyköping in Sweden made securing a record deal look easy, as the band received an offer from Metal Blade after the band’s very first demo last year. I phoned bass player Andreas Hedman to talk about this, and of course the band’s debut album, “Across The Dark River”.  Continue reading

RABID BITCH OF THE NORTH: From the kennel to the castle

RBOTN1

I’ve always found it very interesting trying to cover the acts that not many apart from maybe the inner circle of fans in their hometown know a lot about. I guess Rabid Bitch Of The North from Belfast in Northern-Ireland fits this description. The band has just issued a three track tape through Sarlacc, and fortunately, guitarist Gerry Mulholland put a lot of effort into answering my questions, making this the in depth feature I wanted it to be. PLAYLIST: Week 13

1. BATTLEROAR “Blood Of Legends” (Cruz Del Sur)battleroar-blood_of_legends_import-battleroar-26636900-1656044988-frnt

– With Gerrit singing, this sounds quite different, still very cool. Needs a bit of time.

2. PORTRAIT  ”Crossroads” (Metal Blade)

– Can’t stop spinning this one. So many storng songs and exciting parts. Vocals not as upfront as on the last one.

COBRA: Venomous heavy metal

cobra3

Good timing or bad timing? I am not really sure, but the fact is that the day after I put the finishing touches to this interview, the news that Cobra had secured a deal with the quality label Ván Records, reached me. Of course I am happy for the band, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to discuss what must be a big triumph and maybe also a huge surprise for the Peruvian quintet. Continue reading

PLAYLIST: Week 10

1. BELOW “Across The Dark River” (Metal Blade)Below - Across The Dark River - Artwork

– Very pleasant, warm and melodic doom in the vein of “Chapter VI”-era Candlemass

2. PORTRAIT “Crossroads” (Metal Blade)

– A bit more laidback and relaxed musically/vocally than the last one?

NOCTURNAL: Unholy thrash

nocturnal-2

The new Nocturnal-album “Storming Evil” really took me by surprise. Don’t misunderstand me, I enjoyed the stuff I heard from the band in the past as well, but this new one, the band’s first for High Roller, really made an impression with it’s extremely high level of aggression and energy combined with the bands ability to pen great songs. Continue reading

METAL INQUISITOR: New album, new label

Metal_Inquisitor_BandWelcome to another interview, this time with the mighty Metal Inquisitor, surely one of the best German bands of the last fifteen years. The whole band, apart from drummer Havoc that is, sat down together to give us all the relevant information on their brand new album “Ultima Ratio Regis”, out on Massacre now. Continue reading

SPEEDTRAP: Heavy metal thunder

speedtrap_promo1

I worked hard preparing the questions for this interview back in August 2013, but unfortunately never heard back from the band. A week or two back, half a year later, the answers finally reached me. Completely out of the blue, I would say.

SLOUGH FEG: The war against technology

LUCIFER’S HAMMER: Power and passion

lhammerA few really splendid demos have been unleashed lately, it’s enough to mention names like Stone Dagger and The Unholy. Chiles’ Lucifer’s Hammer, formed by brothers in metal as well as by blood, Rodrigo and Andre, also sprung onto the scene late last year with their very impressive tape only-demo.   Continue reading

ALIVE AFTERSHOCK PT 2: Wrathblade – Aftershock

wrathbladeThis is part two of a feature based around the split-EP “Alive Aftershock”, released by Eat Metal towards the end of last year, containing one self composed tune and a cover song by Greek comrades in metal, Convixion and Wrathblade. To celebrate this release, I decided to hook up with both bands to discuss the split as well as future plans. Continue reading

PLAYLIST: Week 5

1. NOCTURNAL ”Storming Evil” (High Roller)NOCTURNALStormingEvilCoverS

– The first thrash highlight of 2014. Catchy as only the Germans can be!

2. COBRA “To Hell” (Austral Holocaust)

– Cool, old school heavy metal with some hard rock thrown in and the usual Southern American charm. Continue reading
